![]() The thing is, whenever your TV sees an HDR signal, it switches into HDR mode. So even something very much only available in SDR, such as the old BBC classic TV version of Pride And Prejudice, is mistakenly recognised by your TV as playing in HDR.Įven if Netflix isn’t actually messing with the native values of SDR content when defaulting to HDR output through its Xbox Series X app, though, there’s certainly a big problem when it comes to your TV. As soon as you fire the app up, your TV is triggered into HDR mode (even Dolby Vision HDR mode if your TV supports that), and from then on your TV constantly ‘sees’ that it’s receiving an HDR signal from Netflix until you quit the app. ![]() Having now had the chance to play with an Xbox Series X, I’m disappointed to report that this weird Netflix issue still remains. In other words, unlike other console-based video streaming apps such as Amazon Prime Video, the Netflix console app doesn’t switch between HDR and SDR output depending on content. For some reason, it insists on playing everything with a high dynamic range (HDR) ‘flag’ on it - even if a particular show you’ve decided to watch isn’t actually available in HDR. ![]() As I reported way back in 2017, the Netflix app on the PS4, Xbox One X and Xbox One S consoles is a bit weird.
